UK EORI Number
Who needs an EORI number?
Typically, any business or individual wishing to import or export goods to or from the UK for commercial purposes.
Note: The general exception is for individuals who are importing or exporting personal effects.
What is an UK EORI number?
An EORI number (Economic Operators Registration and Identification number) is a unique identifier used by businesses and individuals when importing or exporting goods to and from the UK; essentially it acts as your ‘Customs ID number’.
Having an EORI number is essential for smooth customs processing and avoiding delays or fines.
What is an UK EORI number used for?
For customs Declarations: A trader’s EORI is a mandatory data field required on a customs declaration
For duties and Taxes: Your EORI helps customs authorities to track and monitor your tax liabilities
For tracking shipments: It helps customs authorities to track and manage shipments efficiently
When do I need to apply for an UK EORI number?
It isn’t strictly required until a customs declaration is required which will typically be before goods leave the UK for exports and before the goods arrive for imports, however, as you can apply for an EORI at any time we recommend applying as soon as possible.
How to I get an UK EORI number?
Apply online: Applying for an EORI is a free, one-time application that can be made via the UK Gov website here.
Processing time: The Gov website advises that it can take up to 5 working days to allocate an EORI although typically the application takes 1-2 working days to allocate in our experience.
Note: once an EORI number is allocated it usually take an additional 48 hours to become physically activated and possible to use for a customs declaration.
Note: the lead time could be extended if you are not applying as a UK registered trader.
Format of an UK EORI number
In the UK, the EORI number typically starts with the prefix “GB” followed by a 12-digit number (if you already have a VAT number then this should be ‘numerically linked’ to your VAT number followed by three zeroes at the end).
Example: GB123456789000
Note: If you have both a UK VAT and an UK EORI number which are not ‘numerically linked’, as in, your VAT number is not included within your EORI number then this could cause issues and delays with customs clearance and you will need to contact HMRC directly to resolve this as soon as possible.
How do I check the validity of an EORI number?
There is validation tool on the UK Gov website which you can find by clicking here.
What do I do with my EORI number once I have it?
You should ensure that your EORI number is included on your shipment’s paperwork and it should also initially be independently confirmed to your freight agent and/or customs broker.
As part of your obligations, you are required to keep records for all traded goods you declare to HMRC for four years, for duty and tax purposes, compliance purposes and for government statistics.
You should obtain and retain copies of all customs declarations made, and regarding the EORI specifically your EORI number should be correctly showing in box number 3/2 for your exports and 3/16 for your imports (usually these boxes will be situated next to the address fields for the declared exporter and importer).
